Word-by-Word Abjad Calculator
Break any Arabic phrase into words and get the Abjad value of each one, with a running total.
Quick Answer
A word-by-word Abjad calculator gives every word its own letter total instead of one number for the whole phrase. It also shows the running total and each word’s share. The Basmala splits into 102, 66, 329 and 289, which add up to 786.

Why Count a Phrase Word by Word?
A single grand total hides where the number came from. One long word can dominate a short verse.
Splitting by word shows the shape of the phrase. You can see which word carries the weight.
It also makes checking easier. If one word looks wrong, you fix that word instead of retyping everything.
Scholars working with chronograms rely on this view. A dated phrase is built one word at a time.
The share column gives each word as a percentage of the total. That is useful when comparing two phrases of different lengths.
How Does the Tool Decide Where a Word Ends?
Text is split on spaces and line breaks first. Punctuation also ends a word.
The splitter knows Arabic punctuation as well as Latin. That includes the Arabic comma, semicolon, question mark, and full stop.
Brackets, quotation marks, and slashes also act as separators.
Anything that is not an Abjad letter is reported under the result instead of being added.
Words joined by a zero-width joiner stay together. That character controls shaping, not word boundaries.
What Does a Worked Example Look Like?
Take the four words of the Basmala: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم.
The first word بسم is ba, seen, and meem. That is 2 plus 60 plus 40, or 102.
The second word الله totals 66. The running total reaches 168.
The third word الرحمن totals 329, taking the running total to 497.
The fourth word الرحيم totals 289.
Adding the four subtotals gives 786, the familiar Basmala figure.
The word view shows that one word supplies 42 percent of that number. A single total would never reveal that.
Which Other Examples Are Verified?
| Phrase | Word subtotals | Total |
|---|---|---|
| بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم | 102, 66, 329, 289 | 786 |
| لا اله الا الله | 31, 36, 32, 66 | 165 |
| الحمد لله رب العالمين | 83, 65, 202, 232 | 582 |
Each row adds up to the total shown beside it. You can reproduce any of them in the tool above.
What Does the Word Table Tell Me?
The word value is the sum of that word’s letters. Nothing is weighted or adjusted.
The running total is the sum of every word up to that point. The last running figure equals the grand total.
The share column is simple arithmetic. It is the word value divided by the grand total.
Long words with heavy letters score high. Ra, shin, ta, and ghayn carry the largest values.
None of these numbers carry meaning on their own. They describe spelling, not fate or character.
Which Letter Adds What?
This chart is built from the same data the calculator uses, so the two can never disagree.
| # | Letter | Name | Value |
|---|
Values run 1 to 9, then 10 to 90, then 100 to 900, and finally 1000 for ghayn.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Counting the definite article twice
The prefix alif-lam is part of the word. It adds 31 every time it appears, and the tool includes it. Removing it by hand gives a different and inconsistent number.
Splitting a word at a hyphen or joiner
A zero-width joiner does not end a word. If you paste text with hidden joiners, the tool keeps the word whole.
Expecting the grand total to change with spacing
Extra spaces change the word count, not the total. The same letters always give the same sum.
Comparing totals across different spellings
A name spelled with ta marbuta and one spelled with ha will differ. Record the exact spelling beside the number.
Reading the share column as importance
A high share means a word has heavy letters. It does not mean the word matters more.
Limitations and Edge Cases
Latin words, digits, and emoji are listed as not counted. They never join the total.
A word made only of punctuation is skipped rather than shown as zero.
Poetry with line breaks is treated as one continuous phrase. Each line still splits into words.
Very long inputs stay in your browser, so speed depends on your device.
The tool uses the standard Eastern values. For other systems, use the method comparison tool.
How Do Scholars Use Word Totals in Poetry?
Classical poets often hid a date inside a line of verse. The trick is called a chronogram.
The poet chose words whose letters add up to a target year. A word-by-word view is the natural way to build one.
Each candidate word is costed on its own. The poet then swaps words until the running total lands on the year.
Manuscript scholars work the same line in reverse. They read each word, add the values, and recover the hidden date.
Because the tool shows the running total, you can watch the number climb word by word. That is exactly the view a chronogram needs.
The share column adds another clue. A word carrying a large share often holds the heavy dated letters.
How Can I Check the Numbers Myself?
Every number here can be traced by hand. The tool never hides a step.
Start with the letter detail panel. It lists each letter in a word and the value assigned to it.
Add those letter values and you get the word subtotal. Add the subtotals and you get the grand total.
The running column lets you stop at any point. The figure there is the sum of every word before it.
If a total looks wrong, the fault is almost always a spelling choice. Check for a missing letter or an extra one.
You can also export the table as a CSV file. That makes an independent check in a spreadsheet quick.
