What a taweez is

A taweez (Arabic taʿwīdh, Urdu taʿwīz) is a written amulet found across many Muslim cultures. It is usually a small piece of paper or metal bearing Arabic script: a Qur’anic phrase or divine name, isolated letters, or a grid of numbers or letters arranged like a magic square. People keep them for a range of traditional reasons, and scholars hold a wide range of views — from acceptance of taweez based purely on Qur’anic text, to caution, to outright rejection — about whether and how they may be used.

This decoder does not enter that religious debate. Its job is narrow and factual: to read the marks on a taweez as text and numbers and describe them precisely — the letters present, their Abjad values, how any numbers add up, and what patterns the grid contains.

How the tool works

The decoder runs entirely in your browser with no uploads and no external code. It offers two modes:

  • Text & Abjad — you paste the Arabic text. The tool strips vowel marks, matches each Arabic letter to its Abjad value in the chosen system, and reports the total, a letter-by-letter breakdown, an approximate transliteration, the letter count, repeated letters, and the arithmetic “digit-sum” reduction.
  • Number grid — you type the numbers from the taweez into a grid. The tool sums every row, column, and diagonal, checks whether all lines share one total, flags repeated numbers, reports the minimum, maximum, and sum, tests for central (complementary) symmetry, and states whether the grid is a valid normal magic square.

Methods & calculation details

Abjad values (ḥisāb al-jummal)

In the Abjad system every Arabic letter carries a fixed numeric value. The Mashriqī (Eastern) order is the standard used across most of the Muslim world; the Maghribī (Western) order, historically used in North Africa and al-Andalus, assigns different values to six letters. The tool sums the value of each letter in your text. The six letters that differ are:

All other letters share the same value in both systems (Alif = 1, Bāʾ = 2, Jīm = 3, and so on up to the differing letters above).

Transliteration

The tool maps each Arabic letter to a common Latin-letter equivalent (for example ح → ḥ, ش → sh, ع → ʿ). This is an approximate, letter-by-letter transliteration to aid reading; it does not reconstruct pronunciation, vowels, or grammar.

Grid analysis

For a grid of order n, the tool computes each row, column, and diagonal sum; the reference magic constant for a normal square, n(n²+1)/2; whether every line shares one common total; whether the entries are the distinct numbers 1…n² (which, combined with equal lines, makes it a true magic square); repeated values; and whether opposite cells pair to a constant sum (central symmetry, a property of “associative” squares).

Worked example

Take the word الله (Allāh) in the Mashriqī system. Its letters are Alif (1), Lām (30), Lām (30), Hāʾ (5). The Abjad total is 1 + 30 + 30 + 5 = 66. The tool would also show four letters, a repeated Lām, the transliteration “a-l-l-h,” and a digit-sum reduction of 66 → 6 + 6 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3. Every figure here is plain arithmetic on the letters you entered — nothing more is claimed.

Understanding the results

  • Abjad total — the sum of letter values. With “Both” selected you see the Mashriqī and Maghribī totals side by side; they differ only if your text uses one of the six letters above.
  • Letter breakdown — each letter with its value and transliteration.
  • Repeated letters / numbers — a factual list of what appears more than once.
  • Digit-sum reduction — repeatedly adding the digits of the total until one digit remains. This is a common step in traditional numerology; here it is presented only as arithmetic, with no meaning attached.
  • Grid totals & validation — the line sums, symmetry, and whether the grid is a valid magic square.

These outputs describe structure. Interpreting them spiritually is a matter of personal belief and scholarship that lies outside the tool.

Historical & linguistic context

Assigning numbers to letters is ancient and cross-cultural; in the Arabic tradition it is called ḥisāb al-jummal or the Abjad reckoning, named after the mnemonic ordering abjad hawwaz…. Historically it served practical purposes — numbering, dating (a chronogram encodes a year in a phrase’s Abjad total), and cataloguing — as well as the interpretive discipline known as ʿilm al-ḥurūf, the science of letters. Distinguishing fact from belief. The Abjad values of letters and the arithmetic of a grid are objective facts. The idea that a particular total or arrangement carries spiritual power, protection, or hidden knowledge belongs to traditional belief and interpretation, which scholars evaluate very differently. This tool reports the facts and clearly marks the rest as outside its scope.

Accuracy, limitations & responsible use

  • What it does accurately: matches Arabic letters to Abjad values, sums them correctly in both systems, and analyses number grids reliably.
  • It cannot: reveal hidden or supernatural meaning, predict the future, diagnose spiritual or health conditions, read intentions, confirm that a taweez is effective, or determine divine intent.
  • It is not a religious ruling. Whether making, wearing, or decoding a taweez is permissible is a question of fiqh on which qualified scholars differ; consult a trusted, qualified scholar for guidance.
  • Transliteration and reductions are approximations and conventions, not authoritative readings.
  • Ambiguous scripts: hand-drawn taweez may use unusual letterforms, abbreviations, or symbols the tool cannot recognise; enter only what you can read clearly.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool tell me what a taweez means or does?
No. It tells you what letters and numbers are present and how they add up. Any claim about meaning, power, or effect is belief or interpretation, which this tool does not provide.
What is the difference between Mashriqī and Maghribī Abjad?
They are two orderings of the same alphabet. Six letters — س, ص, ش, ض, ظ, غ — carry different values in each. All other letters match. Selecting “Both” shows you each total.
Why does my grid say it is not a magic square?
A valid normal magic square needs every row, column, and diagonal to share one total and to use the distinct numbers 1…n². If any line differs, or numbers repeat or fall outside that range, the tool reports it is not a valid magic square — while still giving you all the sums.
Why do I get a different Abjad number than someone else?
Totals depend on the system you choose (Mashriqī or Maghribī) and on how edge-case letters such as hamza, tāʾ marbūṭah (ة), and alif maqṣūra (ى) are counted. Different scribes and traditions follow different conventions, so the same text can yield different values.
Is the transliteration exact?
It is an approximate letter-by-letter guide. It does not add vowels or reconstruct pronunciation, so treat it as a reading aid, not a definitive romanisation.
Is decoding a taweez permissible in Islam?
Scholars differ on taweez generally. Reading text and doing arithmetic is itself neutral, but for questions of religious permissibility you should consult a qualified, trusted scholar rather than any calculator.
