In Islam, a good name is a gift a parent gives a child. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdulrahman, and he encouraged names with beautiful, wholesome meanings. The names below are chosen for their clear meanings and are shown with their Arabic spelling and Abjad value so you can explore each one fully.
Naming a child is one of the first responsibilities a parent carries, and Islam gives it real weight. A boy is traditionally named on the seventh day after birth, alongside the aqiqah, and a good name is described as a right the child holds over the parent.
The Sunnah of naming
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “The names most beloved to Allah are Abdullah and Abdulrahman,” and he encouraged naming after the prophets. Three families of names are therefore especially recommended:
Servant of Allah — Abdullah and Abdulrahman, and the wider Abdul- family formed with the 99 Names of Allah (Abdulaziz, Abdulkarim, Abdulhakim…).
Names of the prophets — Muhammad, Ahmad, Ibrahim, Yusuf, Musa, Isa and Yahya (see Prophets’ Names).
Names of the companions — Umar, Uthman, Ali, Bilal, Hamza, Khalid and Zaid (see Sahaba Names).
What makes a good name
Choose a name with a beautiful, wholesome meaning that is easy to pronounce in your community. Every name in the list above shows its meaning, so you can weigh it at a glance.
Names to choose with care
Scholars advise against names that claim servitude to anyone other than Allah — for example Abd- followed by a word that is not one of the divine names — and against names with boastful or unpleasant meanings. The Prophet ﷺ himself changed a few such names to better ones, which shows how much a good meaning matters.
Choose a name with a beautiful, wholesome meaning that is easy to say. The Prophet Muhammad taught that the most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdulrahman, and names of the prophets and righteous companions are also encouraged.

Are Abdullah and Abdulrahman really the best names?
In a well-known hadith the Prophet said the names most beloved to Allah are Abdullah (servant of Allah) and Abdulrahman (servant of the Most Merciful), so many parents favour the Abdul- family of names.
