Abjad numerals (حساب الجمل - Hisab al-Jummal) is an ancient Arabic alphanumeric system where each letter of the Arabic alphabet is assigned a numerical value. This system has been used for over a thousand years in mathematics, chronology, poetry, and mystical studies.
The name "Abjad" comes from the first four letters of the original Arabic alphabet order: أ (Alif), ب (Ba), ج (Jeem), د (Dal).
Historical Uses:
- Recording dates in manuscripts and inscriptions
- Creating chronograms in poetry
- Numerological analysis in Islamic mysticism
- Mathematical notation before Hindu-Arabic numerals
Step 1: Choose your calculation system (Eastern is most common)
Step 2: Type or paste Arabic text in the input box
Step 3: Click "Calculate Abjad Value"
Step 4: View your results including total value and letter-by-letter breakdown
Tips:
- Use the virtual keyboard if you can't type Arabic
- Your calculations are automatically saved to History
- Use Compare mode to analyze multiple names at once
- Try the Compatibility calculator for name matching
Eastern (Mashriqi) System: The most widely used system. Letters are valued in groups: 1-9, then 10-90, then 100-1000.
Western (Maghribi) System: Used in North Africa. Some letter values differ from the Eastern system, particularly for letters like Sheen (ش) and Saad (ص).
Sequential System: A modern, simplified approach where letters are numbered 1-28 in standard alphabetical order.
Ibn Arabi System: Based on mystical and ontological principles from Islamic Sufi traditions.
Hamza (ء) treatment varies by tradition. The isolated hamza can be:
- Counted: Assigned value of 1 (like Alif)
- Ignored: Not included in calculation
Use the "Ignore Hamza" toggle to switch between these modes. When hamza appears on other letters (أ، ؤ، ئ), it's counted as part of that letter's value.
The compatibility calculator uses traditional numerological principles:
- Calculates Abjad value for each name
- Analyzes numerical harmony between values
- Considers digit sum reduction (root numbers)
- Applies traditional compatibility formulas
Results are based on classical Arabic numerology practices. This tool is for educational and entertainment purposes.
Q: Can I use Persian or Urdu text?
A: Yes! Persian letters (پ، چ، ژ، گ) are supported and mapped to their Arabic equivalents.
Q: Should diacritical marks (tashkeel) be included?
A: No. Diacritical marks (َ، ِ، ُ، etc.) are automatically ignored in calculations.
Q: How accurate is the compatibility calculator?
A: It follows traditional numerological formulas used in Islamic culture. Results are for educational purposes only.
Q: Is my data saved online?
A: No. All calculations are performed locally in your browser. Your history is stored only on your device.
Q: What's the difference between Abjad and Gematria?
A: Abjad (Arabic) and Gematria (Hebrew) are similar alphanumeric systems from different linguistic traditions, both assigning numbers to letters.
