Hebrew Gematria Calculator

Calculate the gematria value of any Hebrew word or phrase, with four traditional methods.

Quick Answer: Gematria gives each Hebrew letter a number. This tool adds those numbers to find a word’s value. Type Hebrew text and pick a method. It shows the total and a letter breakdown. You can see all four methods at once. Everything runs in your browser.

How The Tool Works

Gematria is a Hebrew practice. It gives each of the 22 letters a fixed number.

The tool reads each Hebrew letter you type. It looks up the value for your chosen method. Then it adds the values to give a total.

Five letters have a final form used at a word’s end. These are kaf, mem, nun, pe, and tsadi. Most methods treat a final letter like its base letter.

Hebrew is the sister system of the Arabic Abjad. Both turn letters into numbers. The letter values line up closely between them.

The Four Gematria Methods

Standard (Mispar Hechrachi)

The absolute value method. Each letter uses its full value, from 1 to 400. This is the most common method.

Large (Mispar Gadol)

Like the standard method, but final letters count higher. Final kaf is 500, and final tsadi is 900.

Ordinal (Mispar Siduri)

Each letter uses its place in the alphabet, from 1 to 22. Aleph is 1 and tav is 22.

Reduced (Mispar Katan)

Each letter value drops its zeros to a single digit. Yod becomes 1, and qof becomes 1. The digits are then added.

A Worked Example

The Word Chai (חי), “Life”

This famous word has two letters. We add them with the standard method.

ח (Chet) = 8  +  י (Yod) = 10  =  18

The value is 18. This is why 18 is a well-loved number in Hebrew tradition.

Reading Your Result

The value is a sum of letters. It is a language and math fact only.

Two words can share a value by chance. That link does not prove a hidden meaning.

Use gematria for study, comparison, and interest. Do not use it to predict events or make decisions.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Typing In English Letters

Gematria needs Hebrew script. Latin letters have no value here. Write the word in Hebrew.

Ignoring Final Letters

Final letters change the total in the Large method. Pick the method that fits your source.

Mixing Two Methods

Each method gives a different total. Keep one method for the whole word.

Counting Vowel Points

Nikud vowel points carry no value. The tool counts letters only.

Limitations And Edge Cases

The tool counts standard Hebrew letters. It ignores vowel points and punctuation.

Sources differ on spelling and on the final-letter rule. Always note the method you used.

The tool compares numbers. It does not judge meaning or grammar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Gematria?

Gematria is a Hebrew method that gives each letter a number. You add the numbers to value a word.

How Many Methods Does This Tool Offer?

Four: Standard, Large, Ordinal, and Reduced. You can view all four at once.

Why Is Chai (חי) Equal To 18?

Chet is 8 and yod is 10. Together they make 18, a number tied to life.

How Is Gematria Related To Abjad?

They are sister systems. Abjad does the same for Arabic letters, and the values align closely.

Does A Shared Value Mean Two Words Are Linked?

No. A shared value is a coincidence of letters. It carries no proof or power.

Can I Enter Final Letters?

Yes. Type the word as normal. The tool reads final letters correctly for each method.

Is My Text Stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Hebrew letter values follow the standard gematria tradition (Mispar Hechrachi, Gadol, Siduri, and Katan). Final-letter values in the Large method follow the common 500 to 900 convention.

All example totals were verified by direct letter addition. Character handling follows the Unicode Standard for Hebrew script.
